Religious

East orthodox Christianity is the traditional Bulgarian religion. Christian churches were built even before the conversion of the Bulgarians in year 864, in Bulgarian lands. After the fall of Bulgaria under the Ottoman rule, from the medieval Bulgarian monasteries remained only those, which were situated far away from the military roads. The monasteries were slowly recovered by the monks, who transformed their buildings in repositories of Bulgarian spirit and Christian Faith, centers of literary and spiritual life. The churches impress not so much by their appearance, but with their rich interior decoration – the finely wood-carved icons, altar and pulpit, the walls covered with realistic biblical scenes, and icons in the typical Orthodox style.
